It usually takes about 28 weeks from sowing to harvesting so yes - under normal circumstances you're too late. There again, you could try sowing just a few seeds just to see what happens.

Don't waste fridge space - it doesn't do anything to help it keep and often makes it go cloudy. Just keep it in a cupboard.

Double cream substitutes

Evaporated Milk isn't a good substitute. You could use any other cream, milk, plain yoghurt or creme fraiche. In most cases it's not absolutely necessary to use cream in soups - just makes it richer.
