Philanthropy Project is an exciting nonprofit initiative whose mission is to popularize philanthropy. We are using film, TV, and the Web to inspire and enable every man, woman, and child to be a philanthropist.
There are legions of ordinary "citizen philanthropists" from coast to coast who -- together with America's 72,000 charitable foundations and their millions of good works -- are helping to solve some of our nation's most pressing needs.

MATTHEW T. LEE, P H D
"Give & Glow" Lifestyle Expert
Professor Matthew T. Lee - or, as we at Philanthropy Project lovingly refer to him, "Dr. Matt" - is a renowned sociologist who for a decade studied crime and deviance. During this time, he recalls, "I was increasingly drawn to the brighter side of human behavior." In the years since then, Dr. Lee has pioneered the scientific study of human love in its many forms: romantic, parental and altruistic.
In 2006, he was the first person in the history of sociology to teach a college course on the subject. Among his many professional distinctions, Dr. Lee is a professor of sociology at the University of Akron; director of the "Flame of Love" project, whose research is discovering that benevolence in the service of a higher cause can help provide a sense of meaning and purpose in life; senior fellow at the Institute for Research on Unlimited Love; newsletter editor of the pioneering Altruism and Solidarity section of the American Sociological Association; referee for the National Science Foundation.
"Give & Glow" refers to what scientists are discovering about the selfless lifestyle. Research studies are proving that, on average, people who give their time, talents, and treasure to others have significantly happier, healthier, longer lives. It's what scientists call the "Warm Glow Effect."
