That usually happens when you start too late in the season and the weather gets too hot too soon. The only thing I can think of would be to start the seeds indoors a little sooner, or plant earlier ...

No one broke the Liberty Bell. The crack developed due to flaws while casting. No one is sure when the crack appeared, but the bell has been rung a few times since it was cast.

Based on this article and the one in the previous answer, I would say, yes on both counts. The wild cousins of the tomato are out there, and they are different from what we eat today.
